The vacancy was prompted by the resignation of Robin Johnson because she moved out of the district.
“Robin Johnson is a tremendous advocate for children and it is an honor to finish her term for her and a privilege to serve the community, even for so short a time,” Patterson said.
Patterson serves as the president of the Jeffco PTA and the parent of current and former Jeffco students. She has also served on Jeffco’s Strategic Planning Advisory Council and Parent Involvement Committee.
Colorado dictated that the school board had 60 days from Johnson's resignation to appoint an applicant from District 1 to the vacancy. Five applicants were interviewed on Oct. 3.
The school board did not succeed in getting a majority vote to appoint any of the applicants within the 60 days. State law required school board president Lesley Dahlkemper to appoint one of the applicants after the 60-day window closed without a majority vote.
Patterson will be sworn in on Thursday, Oct. 24 at 5 pm. She will serve on the board until the new members are sworn in following this November’s regular board election for seats representing Districts 1, 2 and 5.
“On behalf of the board, I want to thank the five candidates who applied for the vacancy on the Jeffco school board. Each cares about children and wants to ensure they receive a high-quality education,” said Dahlkemper. “The new board member will participate in only two school board meetings and must hit the ground running. Michele is a long-time leader in the community and a strong parent advocate who has extensive knowledge and understanding of the issues facing Jeffco Schools.”
