New England Patriots cornerback Darrelle Revis will be presented with his first big challenge on Sunday in the Week 1 matchup against the Miami Dolphins. Revis will be making his regular season debut in at Patriot uniform and it is highly likely that the team will utilize him in a matchup against Dolphins receiver Mike Wallace. On Thursday, Revis addressed the challenge of going up against a player like Wallace.
Although the Dolphins number one receiver didn’t have a great season last year, Revis is still very wary of his speed and talent. After facing Wallace several times as a member of the New York Jets, Revis called Wallace “probably the fastest receiver in the league.” The new Patriots shutdown corner said preparation of the speedy receiver goes beyond watching him on film.
He said, “Film can play tricks on your eyes sometimes when you watch it. Until you get out there…film speed and game speed are totally two different things. I played against him in the past – a lot of guys on this team have – and I know how fast he is. He’s probably the fastest receiver in the league. We all know that and we are all aware of it as well.”
Revis and the Patriots defense will also be presented with the challenge of going up against the new offensive system installed by the Dolphins as well as the South Florida heat conditions. The Patriots should be well prepared on both fronts. They practiced against Chip Kelly’s quick Philadelphia offense in training camp and have also practiced in humid conditions weather wise. Revis is excited and feels his team is ready.
“Miami always plays fast. They played fast in the past,” Revis said. “The weather plays a part as well. That hot weather. We’re aware. We’re aware of all the situations. I think that’s why we have a week to prepare to go through every scenario we can – player and coachwise –and just game plan the best we can.” Sunday’s potential matchup against Mike Wallace was one of the main reasons Revis was signed by the Patriots. Revis and the teammates are excited to see how well their defensive game plan pans out in this AFC East matchup.
