Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski may miss start of the 2013 season

Boston.com reported on Sunday that New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski may have to undergo another surgery that can lead to Gronkowski missing the start of the season.

Gronkowski, who originally broke his left forearm in the regular season, underwent surgery and returned to the team for the last game versus the Miami Dolphins and seemed to be almost back to his old self but in the first round playoff game against the Houston Texans, Gronkowski reinjured the broken forearm and missed the rest of the playoffs.

Just last week, the Patriots tight end, confirmed that he underwent a third operation on the arm due to an infection and felt that he was getting stronger and was anxious to get back in the weight room and back on the field. But the infection is lingering and may require a fourth surgery that may delay his healing process.

As of now, Gronkowski's doctors may decide to remove the plate that he has in his arm as it might be the cause of the infection and further complications may arise if the infection has spread to other parts of the arm.

The Patriots are deep at tight end and can possibly afford to be without Gronkowski for a couple weeks, but it will be a blow for Tom Brady and the offense if he has to miss more time than that. The team is already thin at wide receiver with the loss of Wes Welker and are relying on the health of Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez to fill the void left by Welker.
