The New England Patriots take on the New York Giants Thursday night in Foxborough, where several players will have the final chance to win a spot on the team's roster for the upcoming season. As the Patriots host the Giants at Gillette Stadium, the successful players will be part of the final 53 left left standing following Saturday's final cuts, according to MassLive on Aug. 29. The other 22 players in the Pats' training camp will be turning in their playbooks.
It's likely most of those decisions have already been made, but tonight's match-up figures to set the stage for players like Tim Tebow, Brandon Bolden and Jake Bequette, to take the field playing for their football lives.
And the opportunities are reportedly there, as it's believed Patriots starters will only line up for about a dozen snaps, as part of "one final tune up".
After that those who haven't yet secured a spot on the team can try to light it up for one last show of what they've got.
Meanwhile, news came Wednesday that the Pats released cornerback Ras-I Dowling. After he survived the first round of roster cuts, he was unable to survive the second, according to NESN.
Injuries appear to be the deciding factor for the former second-round pick. The 25-year-old registered just 10 tackles and no interceptions during his time with New England.
Dowling's release did make room on the roster for linebacker Ja’Gared Davis, whom New England claimed off waivers from the Houston Texans.
The Patriots kick-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. EST. Click here to find out on which channels the game can be viewed depending on your location.
