Former Green Bay Packers tight end Jermichael Finley is still out there and is drawing interest from potential teams despite a neck injury that remains a concern. According to NFL.Com on Thursday, Finley’s agent told “PFT Live” that his client is set to visit a mystery team on Friday. That team is rumored to be the New England Patriots.
Finley already met with the Seattle Seahawks in March and the Patriots are a team in need of a tight end with Rob Gronkowski still recovering from his own injury. Finley would be a good fit based on his potential and production when healthy. The risk comes with Finley’s injury. Although he has received clearance from Dr. Joseph Maroon, the surgically repaired neck is perhaps just another crucial hit away from sideling Finley’s NFL career.
Jermichael Finley can still opt to re-sign with the Packers, but the Seahawks and Patriots are enticing teams that can definitely use an offensive talent like Finley. Money will play a part in which team chooses to take a chance on Finley. Would he be willing to accept less money to play in New England? If he is willing then the Patriots would be a great fit since the team has been searching for a tight end to compliment Gronkowski when he is healthy and fill the void left by Aaron Hernandez.
Currently the Patriots have a slew of undrafted free agents competing to make the team. They also have Michael Hoomanawanui and D.J. Williams under contract. Hoomanawanui figures to be more of a blocking tight end for the team. The Patriots are also believed to be a landing spot for former Jets and Dolphins tight end Dustin Keller. Either Finley or Keller would be a major upgrade over what they already have even with both players coming off of season-ending injuries.
