Patriots Release S.C. State's Phillip Adams

Despite being thin in its secondary, the New England Patriots released free agent cornerback Phillip Adams, according to team officials.

Adams, who was drafted out of South Carolina State in the seventh round of the 2010 NFL Draft, had signed with the Patriots as a free agent in the off-season.

In six games, Adams made eight tackles (seven solo) and intercepted a pass in New England's 34-3 drubbing of the Kansas City Chiefs. Though no reason was given for the S.C. State alum's release, sources have cited average to lackluster performance on special teams play as a factor.

Veteran defensive back Nate Jones was signed to replace Adams on the 53-man roster.

Adams' release could also signal the returns of safety Patrick Chung and cornerback Devin McCourty from the injured list.

Adams was released and re-signed by New England several times, most recently when McCourty went down with injuries. However, Adams himself may have signalled that he won't be returning to New England.

He tweeted to fans: In this imperfect world a person is expected to be perfect I understand that lesson learned time to move on from another situation.
