New England Patriots wide receiver Danny Amendola is not trying to make Patriots' fans forget Wes Welker, he is out to establish his own name in New England. Amendola, signed to a five-year, $31 million deal this past March, has been compared to Welker on many levels except his ability to stay on the field. There is no doubt that if he does stay healthy, the Tom Brady to Amendola connection will catch the league by fire. As WEEI.com reported on August 16, Amendola has quickly become Brady's new favorite target.
The new receiver caught his first touchdown pass in a Patriots' uniform in Friday night's preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He seemed unstoppable as he caught six passes from Brady for 71 yards. What was more impressive about Amendola's performance is the confidence and chemistry between him and Brady.
"Tom works really hard. He gets the job done a lot of the time and that's why he's so good. Like I said, [there are] a lot of fresh faces in our receiving room and we're just all trying to get on the same page."
So far, in two preseason games, it looks like the receivers, mainly Amendola, is on the same page as Brady. Amendola's touchdown reception was reflective of the timing and trust he has developed with his new quarterback. He talked about the touchdown after the game:
"I just had a post route. It was a double post from myself and I think Kenbrell [Thompkins] on the outside and they just played a coverage where they kind of let me go. It was good to get it in."
If the chemistry continues to grow between Brady and Amendola, there will be many more touchdowns for Amendola in a Patriots' uniform. That is of course, if he stays healthy.
