Senior Matt Hobdy cracked a game tying three run homer in the bottom of the sixth and the Allen County-Scottsville Baseball Patriots (1-0) rallied from a 3-0 deficit to win their 2011 season opener 6-3 over Logan County (0-1) on Monday.
Both teams came in with plenty of offensive fire power on paper, but Patriot hurler Eli Weaver and righty Cougar Lawton Jackson battled for 5 scoreless innings before all of the games runs were scored in the sixth.
A John Logan Dockins double, a hit batsman and a Patriot error loaded the bases with one out in the top of the inning before Jackson double to right center scoring two. Justin Hopkins pushed a bunt to the right side to plate Jacob Hopkins and the Cougars had a 3-0 lead.
Dylan Riggs and Seth Peay started the sixth with a walk and a base hit, respectively, and Hobdy, who was last seen completing passes in the KHSAA football championship game, followed by drilling a 2-2 Jackson belt high fast ball into the Lady Patriots softball bleachers.
The shot tied the game at 3. After a ground out, a Daniel Pardue infield hit started another three-run rally that included Jarad Claiborne and Eli Weaver triples. The Patriots batted around and stranded two in the six run sixth.
Weaver notched the win for the Patriots, throwing 6 innings, striking out 4 and giving one earned run, no walks and hitting two batsmen. The Cougars leadoff hitter reached base 4 times against the Patriot hurler but Logan stranded seven.
Sophomore Michael Carter tossed a three up, three down seventh to record the save for the Patriots.
Hobdy, Peay and Weaver had two hits each for AC-S while Dustin Nash scratched out two infield hits for the Cougars.
The Patriots travel to Warren East on Thursday before hosting Metcalfe County on Friday. Russellville will host the Patriots on Saturday.
