Patriotic dishes for the 4th of July

Create your very own patriotic pasta!
Create your very own patriotic pasta!

July 4th is upon us and we will soon be celebrating 238 years of America’s Independence. This time of year always sees many backyard BBQ’s and American-themed parties. This article will ensure that when the big day rolls around, you’ll have some simple recipes ready to bring on the patriotic spirit at every meal.

Your Independence Day celebrations can’t start until you have had breakfast to prepare you for the long day of festivities head. Pancakes are an all-American favorite and seem like the perfect breakfast food to start your day.

To create ‘Patriotic Pancakes,’ simply make your favorite kind. These could be the ‘shake and pour’ kind or (if you are feeling ambitious) you may make them from scratch. Once the pancakes are done, arrange them on a plate and top them off with sliced strawberries and blueberries as well as a dollop of whipped cream. The fresh fruit and the pop of America’s colors will be sure to get you in the spirit and ready to tackle the day ahead.

When lunch time rolls around, continue the Independence Day celebration with Red White and Blue Spaghetti – a pasta dish that would make even George Washington proud.

What you’ll need:

· 1 lb. cooked spaghetti

· 1 teaspoon Americolor Red-Red Food Coloring

· 1 teaspoon Americolor Navy Blue Food Coloring

· 2 teaspoons olive oil

· 4 tablespoons water

1. Rinse 2/3 of the spaghetti in water, and then separate the spaghetti in thirds into three gallon size zip closure bags.

2. Place the red coloring in to one, the blue into the other and mix each with two tablespoon water. Blend gently until the colors are absorbed.

3. You can rinse the excess color off the pasta before mixing them together.

4. For the remaining 1/3 of the pasta, add the olive oil to it, so the other colors don't rub onto the natural color of the spaghetti.

5. Mix the spaghetti noodles together just before serving. Note that if you mix them ahead of time, the colors may transfer to the other noodles.

For dinner, you might have some type of BBQ planned or want to spend some time outside in the warm summer evening air. It’s the perfect weather for something light and fresh.

Grilled Chicken with Red & Blue(berry) Salsa could be the perfect 4th of July dinner dish.

Red & Blue(berry) Salsa:

· 1/2 cup fresh blueberries, chopped

· 1/2 cup fresh whole blueberries

· 1/2 red bell pepper, seed and diced

· 1/4 red onion, diced

· 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and minced (optional)

· 3 tablespoons fresh minced parsley

· 2 tablespoons fresh minced mint (optional)

· 1 tablespoon lemon juice

· Pinch of salt

1. In a bowl, stir all the ingredients for the salsa together and refrigerate until meal time.

2. For the Grilled Chicken, cook it however you’d like. Once the chicken is done, place some salsa on top and enjoy!

Once dinner is finished and the fireworks are only minutes away, wrap up the night with Fireworks Red, White and Blue Daiquiris.

· 2 cups ice cubes

· 1/3 cup blue passion fruit liqueur, such as Hpnotiq or Alize

· 1/4 cup fresh lime juice (about 4 limes)

· 2 tablespoons blue curacao liqueur

· 2 tablespoons white rum

· 2 tablespoons sugar

· 1 cup frozen strawberries

· 1 cup watermelon chunks, frozen

· 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice (about 2 limes)

· 2 tablespoons white rum

· 1 tablespoon sugar

· 1 cup ice cubes

· 1 cup coconut sorbet

· 1/4 cup rum

· 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice (about 2 limes)

· 1 cup ice cubes

Blue Layer:

Put 1 1/2 cups of ice cubes in the blender. Add some passion fruit liqueur, lime juice, blue curacao, rum, and sugar. Blend until slushy with no chunks of ice left, and add the remaining ½ cup of ice as needed. Place in the freezer while you make the next layer.

(*Rinse the blender before every layer.)

Red Layer:

Add frozen strawberries, watermelon, lime juice, rum, and sugar to the blender. Blend until slushy with no chunks of fruit. With the motor running, add the ice (a few cubes at a time), until thick and smooth. Stir in 1-2 tablespoons of water if the consistency is too thick. Store in freezer.

White Layer:

Add coconut sorbet, rum and lime juice to the blender. Blend until smooth and thick. With the motor running, add the ice (a few cubes at a time), and continue to blend until thick and no bits of ice remain.

Pour the red layer into the bottom of a glass (about 1/3 of the way). Then gently spoon 1/3 cup of the blue later over the red layer so that they remain separate. Finish the drink by spooning 1/3 cup of the white later over the blue layer.

Sit back and enjoy the fireworks show with this wonderful refreshing beverage to finish off the July 4th celebrations.
