Patriot party poised to strike again

In what continues to baffle media outlets and puzzle politicians, candidates keep popping up out of nowhere early in the state elections. The big difference this time around is that they are bringing voters and support with them. These are not the weird, off beat activists trying to save screech owls or start their own currency. These are business owners and teachers rising to the patriotic call of duty.

One such business woman turned gubernatorial candidate is Debra Medina from Texas. With her

command of the Constitution and pertinent issues facing Texans, Medina has risen quickly in the political debates and made quite an impressive showing against Rick Perry and Kay Bailey Hutchison. Medina is all "down-home" with her folksy Texas drawl and country quips. And while she has been known to pack a firearm, make no mistake, Medina is no Sarah Palin. Her conservatism goes beyond the fluff and populism of most in the Republican Party and means to make radical changes. Medina is a true, Ron Paul Republican and like her mentor, is all business.

While it is not unusual for politicians to promise change, the statements that come from these patriotic, tea-party supported, grassroots newcomers have more of the ring of a declaration than a promise. After all, it is difficult to say that one is going to eliminate property taxes apart from the realization that this promise is rather easily verified. Perhaps it is the conviction with which it is said, or the fact that it is backed by the U.S. Constitution that gives it the ring of truth. Whatever the case, it packs a far more powerful punch than the empty promises of previous career politicians.

While incumbent Rick Perry flirted with the female anchors and bristled at probing questions during the debate, Medina was busy dismantling his hypocritical spending tactics and voting record. She pointed out his financial support of the trans-NAFTA highway which runs through Texas and is a national financial boondoggle. She also pointed out how Perry had saddled the state with a type of income tax

even though Texas has no official state tax. Medina's answer to this is to eliminate Texas property taxes and offset them with smaller, broad based consumer taxes.

It is Medina's Ron Paul association that separates her from the Republican majority and even some of the tea-partiers. While she clearly espouses the conservative values one would expect to find in the deep South such as pro-life and gun ownership, she is just as adamantly opposed to government intrusion. In fact, this was one of the most pronounced differences between Medina and her two challengers. She stood in sharp contrast with Perry regarding the government mandating that sixth grade girls be vaccinated against the Human Papillomavirus which he signed in 2007. Medina also contrasted with Hutchison during the discussion of utilizing the Federally backed E-Verify system. While both of the politicians complained about the lack of support from the Federal Government, Medina stressed the need for state sovereignty and less

 Federal intrusion.

One way which Medina stressed could be used to ensure Texas sovereignty were the processes of nullification and interposition. These are legal processes in which over-reaching Federal laws can be blocked or repealed by states when they violate states' rights. On this one issue alone, Medina established herself as a Texan first and foremost while the other two candidates clearly saw their position as an extension of "the government".

Once again, the Lone Star State has provided us with a political leader who has the vision and wisdom embodied in our founding fathers. Like Ron Paul, Debra Medina is a patriot fighting for her state first, and her country as a whole. Texans should be proud to have her as a citizen and as a candidate for governor. If those who love Liberty and individual freedom do not support her, the regret will be almost instantaneous.
