Patrick Stewart’s wedding to Sunny Ozell, 35, is coming up, and Sir Ian McKellan will officiate. Sound confusing? Not as confusing as when the famous actor says he will marry his long-time friend. “Yes, I'm going to marry Patrick. Well, no. How else do you put that? I am going to officiate at his wedding.” UPI reports the story on Tuesday, March 19.
It seems that Gandalf – to use McKellan’s recent role from “The Hobbit – has officiated at a wedding before in Britain, and he thinks he can do so again, even a wedding in the United States. No problem. “Well I don't know, but in Massachusetts, in the middle of America somewhere, you get a friend along, and I read out the words, and Sunny and Patrick will then be married. ‘I declare you man and wife.’”
Ok, whatever works. Massachusetts does have a special law allowing people with character references to be one day wedding officials. No doubt Patrick Stewart, 72, will find a way to take care of all the legal niceties. How hard can it be? No harder than locating Massachusetts in the middle of the country. Or was that Middle Earth?
Sir Ian McKellan and Patrick Stewart have been friends for years, and both men co-starred, as Magneto and Professor Xavier respectively, in the “X-Men” films. Next, they will go back to their classical theater roots as they take on both Samuel Beckett's “Waiting for Godot” and Harold Pinter's “No Man's Land” on Broadway together.
