TORONTO – The Canada Council for the Arts announced the 14 winners of the Governor General’s (GG) Literary Awards on Tuesday. The seven English and seven French awards are given to authors, illustrators and translators in the categories of fiction, poetry, drama, non‑fiction, children’s literature (text and illustration) and translation.
Each winner will receive $25,000, as well as a specially-bound copy of the winning book, during the awards presentation held at Rideau Hall, in Ottawa, on November 24. The publishers of the winning books will receive $3,000 each to support promotional activities. Non-winning finalists will get $1,000 each.
- Fiction: Patrick deWitt (“The Sisters Brothers”) and Perrine Leblanc (“L’homme blanc”)
- Poetry: Phil Hall (“Killdeer”) and Louise Dupré (“Plus haut que les flammes”)
- Drama: Erin Shields (“If We Were Birds”) and Normand Chaurette (“Ce qui meurt en dernier”)
- Non-fiction: Charles Foran (“Mordecai: The Life & Times”) and Georges Leroux (“Wanderer : essai sur le Voyage d’hiver”)
- Children’s Literature — Text: Christopher Moore (“From Then to Now: A Short History of the World”) and Martin Fournier (“Les aventures de Radisson - 1. L’enfer ne brûle pas”)
- Children’s Literature — Illustration: Cybèle Young (“Ten Birds”) and Caroline Merola (“Lili et les poilus”)
- Translation: Donald Winkler (“Partita for Glenn Gould” - English translation of “Partita pour Glenn Gould” by Georges Leroux) and Maryse Warda (“Toxique ou L’incident dans l’autobus” - French translation of “The Toxic Bus Incident” by Greg MacArthur)
“The 2011 GG-winning books reflect the diversity and depth of contemporary Canadian literature,” said Robert Sirman, Director and CEO of the Canada Council for the Arts, in a press release. “With the hundreds of other great books that have won Canada’s national literary award over the past 75 years, they represent pure gold for Canadian creative excellence.”
This year’s GG winners were chosen among 1,002 English titles and 682 French titles.
