Patricia Field, Cavalli, and Chanel Iman defend Galliano, fate of label unknown

Disgraced designer John Galliano reportedly was at an Arizona rehab facility today, which is the day before Christian Dior's Fall 2011 show on Friday.  All this as the luxury fashion house worries about boycotts of The John Galliano presentation this Sunday.  The John Galliano runway show has been cancelled due to the events of last week.  Instead, editors and buyers will be invited to view the new collection at a smaller scale presentation on Sunday, the news agency AFP reports.

Though Galliano is out of a job at Christian Dior due to allegations of anti-Semitism, the label's fall 2011 collection is and always has been anticipated during Paris Fashion Week.   The show will be denied it's famous finale...Galliano taking a bow in a anxiously anticipated, flamboyant costume.   The design team at Dior will finish the collection in order to show tomorrow, as it was not finished before Galliano's dismissal, sources tell The Wall Street Journal.

Galliano also may not be present at the showing of his personal brand's collection on Sunday.  Either way, the label's fate is unclear.  Suzy Menkes of the New York Times reports that the John Galliano brand, also part of LVMH as is Dior, barely breaks even financially.

It will also be interesting to see which celebrities will want to be photographed front row at the Galliano brand show.  But, even after Oscar winner Natalie Portman distanced herself from him in a statement...many famous names have come to Galliano's defense.  So, he may not have an issue with his front row showing after all.

Famous designer Patricia Field and even more famed for her costume designs for Sex in the City, claims to have a Jewish stepfather referencing her last name.  Field has come under fire for the following statements on her blog:

"IN PRAISE OF JOHN GALLIANO.  Beauty, intelligence and energy would describe John as I know him.  Where in this trilogy could one find hate?  I ask you!  My second question is...What exactly did he say?  And the third is...What is really going on here??"-

Patricia Field later told WWD:

"People in fashion all they do is go and see John Galliano theater every season.  That's what he gives them.  To me, this was the same except it wasn't in a theater or in a movie.  John lives in theater. It's theater. It's farce. But people in fashion don't recognize the farce in it. All of a sudden they don't know him.  But it's OK when it's Mel Brooks' The Producers singing 'Springtime for Hitler'."

Designer, Roberto Cavalli tells the UK Telegragh:

"John Galliano?  I don't believe it because I know John since many years.  He's such a wonderful person.  I can't believe that he makes some racist toward somebody, because he's so international...I think that somebody wants to try to be bad with him. I think la Maison Dior should make to him a big red carpet because he helped Maison Dior to be what it is today. I don't want to judge anybody, but I love John. John, I am with you."

Giorgio Armani also told the UK Telegraph:

"I'm very, very sorry for him. It's obviously a difficult time for him. I'm also very sorry that they even videotaped him without him knowing and now that's all out."

Victoria's Secret model, Chanel Iman who will walk in the Dior show on Friday told Hollywood Life:

"I love John Galliano. I've been working with him for years and he is one of the most amazing, genius men in this business...He is one of the most creative, genius designers that I've worked with and he's so open to all types of people. He's loving and he's caring and I wish him all the best."

Italian Vogue editor, Franca Sozzani says on the Italian Vogue blog:

I am against and I condemn any kind of racism or any behavior that shows disrespect toward any religion.  But I would like to say that I'm just as disgusted by these people who saw what state John was in and took advantage of the situation by trading on his name and notoriety.  It's obvious that this was a bit inauthentic in the sense that if you are truly fighting with someone, you don't have time to pick up a mobile phone, turn on the video GIGGLING and mockingly film what he is saying.  Exploiting someone's notoriety to have your own moment of fame is one of the most disgraceful and disloyal things one can do.  Any famous person is open to attack or insult, and it's difficult to defend him when, as in this case, the news goes around the world."

The Paris Prosecutors Office has decided to put Galliano on trial over his alleged racial insults, which may occur in the late Spring...which makes Patricia Field's reference above to Springtime for Hitler reference ironic.  What many do not realize is that anti-semitism in France is illegal, unlike in the U.S...where free speech is protected by the Constitution.  If found guilty the designer could face six months imprisonment and/or approx. $30,000 in fines.
