Patricia Cornwell novel, 'At Risk,' on Lifetime marks author's first ever film adaptation  - Crime writer, Patricia Cornwell, and her many fans will see her novel At Risk adapted for the small screen this weekend. The film airs on Lifetime on Saturday, April 10, 2010.  At Risk marks the first time ever that any of the New York Times #1 bestselling author's novels have been adapted to film for either television or the big screen.

At Risk is about the pairing up of Massachusetts State police officer, Win Garano (played by Daniel Sunjata), and District Attorney, Monique "Money" Lamont (played by Andie MacDowell). Lamont sends Garano to Tennessee to work a 20-year-old murder case.  Garano works the case with the help of Sykes (played by Annabeth Gish), but the leads eventually send them back to Boston.

In an interview with Patricia Sheridan in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Ms. Cornwell talked about her impressions of the film adaptation, particularly if she felt protective about her work as it was being adapted.  She said:

"I was really lucky in that I didn't need to be really protective. They are so good at what they do, and they brought such wonderful vision to the project. They actually were extremely faithful in trying to adapt my work in a very accurate sort of way. I am very cognizant that film is a very different art form than writing. I have a big respect for that, so I am more flexible about letting people stray away from the bounds than the people themselves might be."

It may seem surprising to readers of Cornwell's novels that it's taken this long for one of her books to be adapted to film.  She has had several nibbles for her bestselling Kay Scarpetta series, but the strongest possibility seems to be happening more recently with the reported interest of Academy Award-winning actor, Angelina Jolie.

Patricia Corwell herself will make an appearance in the film.  Rather than take the cameo role as a scientist that was offered to her, according to Cincinnati.com, Ms. Cornwell decided to take the part of a waitress.

Lifetime took on two Cornwell books when it adapted At Risk.  The adaptation of the sequel to that book, The Front, will air the next week.

At Risk and The Front air on the Lifetime television network on Saturday, April 10, 2010 and Saturday, April 17, respectively at 9:00 p.m. ET.
