What would be the most popular idea of the quintessential Hawaiian dining experience? Probably Luau. OK, but what else evokes the idealized vision of Hawaiian dining? Enjoying an island-inspired meal while watching the sand and turquoise blue ocean beyond, framed by swaying coconut palms, right?
There are certainly many dining spots on Oahu that offer a view of the beach and beyond, but few offer the charm and unpretentious sophistication of the Hau Tree Lanai. Located off the lobby in the New Otani Hotel, this is a restaurant that never fails to please both residents and visitors.
While technically not in Waikiki, Kaimana beach is very Waikiki-adjacent. Just a five or ten minute stroll up Kalakaua Avenue, past the Waikiki Aquarium and Natatorium, this small stretch of sand offers spectacular views minus the crowds or traffic noise.
Dining alfresco at the Hau Tree means sitting beneath the majestic trees of the same name and gazing out over the sparkling beach to the reef and gently surf beyond. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, anytime is a great time to enjoy a meal and soak in the view.
The menu blends the best of continental fare with Island and Asian flavors. On a recent visit for lunch, our party of five enjoyed cocktails and traditional favorites like eggs Benedict and Reuben sandwich, as well as fresh Poke, papaya chicken salad and miso sake salmon. Other offerings include baby back ribs, vegetable curries, the Hau Tree burger and grilled shrimp salad. Service is friendly and attentive without being intrusive. Portions are generous and prices are reasonable, especially considering the location.
So, whether it is for a power breakfast, social lunch or special occasion dinner, the Hau Tree is a winning choice. Come enjoy the best of Oahu patio dining and leave with aloha.
