A 37-year-old Paterson man was killed in an early morning hit and run outside the Mantra Restaurant in Paramus and police are looking for a van involved, authorities said.

According to preliminary information, the incident began at 2:35 a.m. Sunday when an argument broke out between groups from Paterson and Newark at the restaurant, Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli said.

One group left and got into three vehicles, including a van, while the other group followed and began chasing them around the parking lot.

The victim, identified as Kevin Brewington, apparently jumped on the van in an attempt to open the doors, but as the van hit the curb Brewington fell hitting his head against it, Molinelli said.

It was not clear if Brewington was caught on the van or was being held, he said.

The van is a gold or champagne converted “cargo-type” minivan, according to Molinelli.

He declined to say if investigators had any witnesses or footage from a security camera over a portion of the parking lot.

Investigators from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Fatal Accident Investigation Unit and Paramus police remained on the scene Sunday afternoon.

Mantra Restaurant is located at the Mall at IV on Route 4 west between Kinderkamack Road and Forest Avenue.
