House Republicans and Fox News may desperately want to act like the government shutdown is all President Obama's fault, but that is an especially hard lie to push when so many of their allies keep cheering on the results.
Rep. Michele Bachmann had already removed all doubt by saying that Republicans were "the happiest I've seen" after the shutdown. But if that were not enough, WorldNetDaily's Pat Buchanan has written a column, not only encouraging House Republicans to keep the country shut down over the Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act (better known as Obamacare), but to destroy the American economy with default -- to "Samson-like, bring down the roof of the temple on everybody’s head" if they cannot get what they want out of it.
"Republicans should refuse to raise the white flag and insist on an honorable avenue of retreat," Buchanan writes. "And if Harry Reid’s Senate demands the GOP end the sequester on federal spending, or be blamed for a debt default, the party should, Samson-like, bring down the roof of the temple on everybody’s head.
"This is an honorable battle lost, not a war."
Buchanan also advises Republicans to ignore three new polls showing the G.O.P.'s approval rating in shambles due to the shutdown, arguing that "If the right is right, time will prove it."
Which, of course, begs the question: Why not just get it over with and let time prove it sooner rather than later? If Obamacare is a failure, the G.O.P. will have the perfect platform for their 2014 midterms, and more importantly, the 2016 presidency.
The reality is the exact opposite: Conservatives are terrified that the Affordable Care Act, which they fought every inch of its signing into law and have tried to repeal over forty times since, will actually work. So much so that people like Pat Buchanan are now encouraging Congress to deliberately default just to try to prevent it.
