Yesterday, Pat Buchanan apparently sought to prove once and for all that he absolutely is crazy enough for WorldNetDaily.
Buchanan begins his latest foray into insanity by writing that "In the showdown over the shutdown of the U.S. government, the Obamaites tipped their hand yesterday as what their strategy is."
"Taking a page out of Saul Alinsky's 'Rules for Radicals,' the plan is to maximize the people’s pain – to maximize the political damage to the enemy, the Republican Party.
"What else explains it?"
Answer: The G.O.P. House of Representatives holding the spending bill hostage to demand cuts to Obamacare, followed by automatic furloughs of state employees that the U.S. government presently does not have the funds authorized to employ.
When Pat Buchanan asks "What else explains it?", what he means to ask is if there is any more nefarious anti-Obama possibility, not a more logical one.
Buchanan proceeds, like many of his colleagues have already, to try to sign Obama's name to the shutdown even as members of the G.O.P. House of Representatives are celebrating it.
"Consider this," Buchanan writes. "Asked Wednesday if there were any danger of America defaulting on her debt, President Obama rushed to assure a reporter that, yes, indeed, there certainly is such a peril.
"Why would a president act in so perverse a manner, were he not trying deliberately to rattle or panic the markets?"
Answer: Because he wasn't. He was trying to put pressure on the House of Representatives to get the bill, absent of the Romney / Ryan plan, to his desk.
"Equally telling is what happened at the World War II Memorial," he continues.
"This is an open memorial on the mall, to which the old soldiers of the Greatest Generation, flown here on honor flights, come to a last roll call with their comrades. The memorial is dedicated to them, to what they and their buddies did, and to those who never came home.
"But when the old soldiers got here, the Park Service, apparently acting on orders from the White House complex, had thrown up steel barriers and crime-scene tape to keep them from visiting the site on what is surely the last trip many will ever make to see their memorial.
"What kind of sick mind does something like that?"
Answer: See remarks on employee furloughs above. Buchanan is clinging to the hope that if he recites the same lies over and over again, along with all of his reality-challenged counterparts, he can magically will them into being reality.
It is only after airing a laundry list of completely fabricated complaints about Obama that we finally get to the true heart of the issue, presented from the perspective of Buchanan himself:
Undeniably, Republicans have voted to defund Obamacare, to suspend it for one year and to reform it. But in each of these three votes, the House also voted to fund the entire government.
And there you have it. By Buchanan's own description, Republicans demanded, three times, to repeal, delay or severely alter the Affordable Care Act, and only under those conditions would they provide a spending bill.
I would like to close this article by asking Buchanan a question in turn: What kind of person considers paying the bills to be a concession?
