On Sunday, March 9, Rev. Lois Blakey-Paige, pastor of New Canaan Worship Center in Richmond, Virginia preached from Romans 5:17-20 where she explained how sin entered the world through one man. That one man was Adam.
Then Pastor Paige explained that even though we were born in sin, it wasn't anything we had done. It was all because of the sin the one man, Adam, committed. However, just as sin entered the world through one man, grace and redemption also came through one man. That one man was Jesus.
Throughout the sermon, the pastor emphasized "Faithfulness for Our Righteousness."
She related that our righteousness is our "right standing with God." However, it is not because of anything we have done or will ever do. Our righteousness is based on what Jesus did on the cross.
Pastor Paige asked the question: "Are we trying to earn God's favor or are we resting in the finished work of Jesus Christ?" She then said, "We can't be under water and not be wet any more than we can't be under grace and not be holy."
Through several biblical examples such as Abraham, the Roman centurion, and the Syrophoenician woman, the pastor reiterated how faith plays a major part in the understanding of our righteousness.
A simple way to understand our righteousness is to believe that we are the seed of Abraham, and everything God promised Abraham belongs to us. We just have to receive it. How do we receive it? We receive it by consenting to it.
The pastor admonished the congregation to receive the righteousness that is already ours. However, we have to consent to it being ours.
