Pastor tells children and youth how to make right choices

Pastor Lois Blakey-Paige preached to the children and youth at New Canaan Worship Center in Richmond, Virginia on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013. She invited the adults in the congregation to listen in.

Using the familiar text of Matthew 7:7-12, she used the title, "The Wisdom of Making Right Choices."

Pastor Paige began her sermon by demonstrating the methods some people use to make choices:

  • a coin toss calling heads or tails
  • paying attention to what's written in a fortune cookie
  • saying "Eeny, meeny, miny, moe"

The text is in red in the Bible indicating these are the words of Jesus. Jesus tells us how to make right choices:

  • Ask and it shall be given unto you.
  • Seek and you shall find.
  • Knock and the door will be opened unto you.

The pastor further explained that when we need to make a decision, we should always ask God. He will give it to us, and it will be good because God gives only good gifts. God will not give us anything that is bad for us. What God gives us is not just for us. It is also for our neighbors.

After asking, we should also seek. Jesus says if we seek, we will find. The searching is the waiting part. So as we seek, we wait.

After asking and seeking, then we knock. Many times opportunities will open up for us. Therefore, it is important to step in when the door of opportunity opens.

Pastor Paige reiterated how to make the right choices in 2013 for the things we want:

  1. Ask God who gives good gifts.
  2. Seek and wait.
  3. Knock on and open the door of opportunity.
