A party of 20, which included someone claiming to be a pastor, stiffed a waiter on the 18 percent gratuity on an over $200 bill, according to a photo of a receipt posted on Reddit.com and reported by Yahoo News on Wednesday, Jan. 30, which was quickly picked up by @weirdnews on Twitter.
The photo of the receipt shows a bill for $34.93 that includes an automatic 18 percent gratuity of $6.29 and a blank space for an additional tip.
The diner crossed off the $6.29 tip amount, put a zero in the additional tip space and wrote on the receipt, “I give God 10% why do you get 18?” Then the person wrote “Pastor” above the signature on the receipt.
The Reddit user, gateflan, who posted the photo of the receipt explained in the comments that the receipt was part of a total bill of over $200 for a party of 20, which is why an 18 percent gratuity was automatically added to the bill.
“Parties up to eight may tip whatever they’d like, but larger parties receive an automatic gratuity. It’s in the computer, it’s not something I do.”
The server added that the party was more than happy with the service they received, they told the server that everything was great.
“They just didn’t want to pay when the time came,” the server noted.
Upon posting the picture of the receipt, the Reddit user commented, “My mistake sir, I’m sure Jesus will pay for my rent and groceries.”
A Reddit user, AnotherClosetAtheist left the comment that the Book of Mormon tells us to take care of the poor and that you cannot use the excuse that it is their own fault that they are poor.
Another Reddit user commented on the ‘Pastor’ receipt comments, saying:
“Also see Proverbs 14:31: ‘He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.”
