Passenger trains will once again depart Roanoke this fall as the Norfolk & Western Historical Society (NWHS) and the Roanoke Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society (NRHS) team up to offer two great trips November 5th and 6th, 2011.
In cooperation with Amtrak and Norfolk Southern, the general public is invited to experience the joy of passenger railroading on two chartered trips.
The first trip on November 5th will travel from Roanoke to Abingdon (Bristol), Virginia. This was the original N&W main-line and hosted such famous trains as the Pelican (which was ran in cooperation with the Southern Railway). The train will be departing Roanoke at 8am and return at 7pm that evening.
On November 6th, the train will head to Bluefield, WV in the heart of the Coal Country. Bluefield was the headquarters of the Pocahontas Division which has sent millions of tons of coal to the tidewater in Norfolk over the past 100+ years. This trip includes 38 miles of running along the New River in Virginia.
Passengers will ride in comfortable AMTRAK Amfleet Coaches and snacks will be available for purchase on-board. Be sure to check out the special "First-Class" options available on both trips to experience the luxury that once rode the US Railroads.
