Sometimes a jelly roll is just a jelly roll, and sometimes it’s something completely different. The historical roots of the blues reach back to social settings in which liberal sexual attitudes were the bedrock of daily life. In these cultures, many forms of erotically provocative expression were generally not seen as shameful, or sinful, but simply fun – an important source of joy and diversion in the midst of an otherwise harsh, difficult, dangerous world.
As blues music made its way into the consciousness of people living in more sexually repressed societies, it clashed with the dominate social values, prompting blues musicians to disguise their lyrics. Blues singers indulged in "double talk" or innuendo to deal with themes that “proper” people would likely find offensive. Thus, in a way, it is fitting that the House of Blues should be the venue for Cleveland’s first “Party Erotique” - a night of eroticism, musical expression, fetish fashion, and fantasy.
Party Erotique is not a swinger’s party. It is intended to be an inspiring artistic and cultural event bringing together open-minded people from all walks of life, including those who value traditional marriage and monogamy. “Monogamy shouldn't be monotonous” says a logo for Ambiance (“the store for lovers”) – one of the cosponsors of the upcoming night of naughty fun.
Party Érotique is a large-scale event designed to celebrate sexuality and freedom of expression through live shows, music, dancing, costumes, video and performance art. One can think of it as a combination masquerade ball, lingerie party, fetish fashion spectacle, and burlesque show. Since the masquerade masks provide a level of anonymity, this event ought to appeal to nearly anyone who has a naughty sense of adventure and an appreciation for erotic diversity. In fact, for those who have been curious about alternative lifestyles and adult events, this would be an excellent way to sample some fun and meet people in a safe, public setting.
In order to maintain the ambiance of mystique and erotic merriment, risqué costumes and masquerade masks are not simply requested, they are required. Entertainment for the event will include top erotic dance, fetish performers, and burlesque acts.
If this year's Party Erotique is successful, it could become a yearly event.
