In the shadow of the embattled overturning of Proposition 8, California’s constitutional amendment to make same-sex marriage illegal, issues have arisen at Garden Grove’s Crystal Cathedral, Dr. Robert Schuller’s mega-ministry.
Definitions of marriage and sexual morality are described in the ministry’s recently distributed Crystal Cathedral Worship Choir and Worship Team Covenant which choir and team members were asked to sign. Regarding the surrounding controversy, we ended part one of this article with questions.
Does codifying sexual behavior go against the thesis of the Christian church?
Some ministries have adopted a doctrine of inclusion and hold that there is no eternal penalty for sin. However, Jesus’ controversial earthly ministry called for and defined sexual purity in Matthew 19 and Mark 10. He remains the model churches look to in sharing with its members understood sacred codes by which we must live as well as the penalties for rebellion against them.
"Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him."-John 14:23
Should there be declared standards for ministry leadership and regulations on how to apply them?
John 12:48 teaches we are judged on our obedience to Christ’s words. There are standards we obey. Hebrews 13:7 subjects members of the body of Christ to human oversight. Leaders have a responsibility to an exemplary lifestyle that is consistent with Bible doctrine (I Timothy 4:11-12). Devoted Christian leaders live by and declare the Bible’s guidance as to righteous living, even when it’s controversial (II Timothy 4:3)
The body of Christ has an opportunity to elevate the discussion about sexuality and sexual intimacy. The body can choose to cast fresh vision for marriage and sexual intimacy. From Genesis 2 through I Corinthians 7, the Bible inspires and regulates our sexual behavior in a comprehensive, practical way. The book of Songs celebrates erotic love. Why would the church take any less of an approach in its presentations?
A church’s goal mustn’t be to avoid controversy. Jesus didn’t. The issue with “covenants” like Crystal Cathedral’s is that it too narrowly deals with sexual morality. It does appear to target a select few. It’s picking low hanging fruit. It is time for the church to stretch.
