The following the 2nd part of KBYR “Tech Talk” with Chris Story radio Q&A discussing Career Makeovers that aired on August 5, 2014.

Q. Writers- write books! Can that help?

You know that is good point. I have 11 books and it certainly helped me stand out on the various topics whether it be technology, women or career development. Books are helpful because the media can grab on to them and you can increase your visibility with books. Many writers tell me that they are pursuing eBooks rather than traditional books because the process is faster and they can have content out there sooner. Books like I authored require a bit of research, and then the publishing cycle adds on time so it can take a year or longer to publish a book and this is just not quick enough anymore in a digital world.

Q Where are the jobs?

The jobs are actually everywhere. The good news is that content is key now with the internet everyone is looking for original content for websites, blogs, social media. I would encourage people looking for jobs to watch the trends and key sites for opportunities. For example, Business Insider (The site provides and analyzes business news and acts as an aggregator of top news stories from around the web. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Business_Insider ) is a popular on-line news venues- top ten trends, top ten trends before the opening bell etc. They posted that they are paying writer interns to work in the new UK office

I was in Hawaii last year for as speech and the Huff Post and Civil Beat announced a partnership that I was told could potentially create more on-line writing opportunities.

Q. What other trends are you seeing that journalists who turn influencer should be aware of?

On-line Video is big and I think an important tool for many of us who are thought leaders. For example

Here is some YouTube traffic since 2012 (illustration of someone who is positing himself as a thought leader in statistics).

“60 hours of video are uploaded every minute, or one hour of video is uploaded to YouTube every second.

  • Over 4 billion videos are viewed a day
  • Over 800 million unique users visit YouTube each month
  • Over 3 billion hours of video are watched each month on YouTube
  • More video is uploaded to YouTube in one month than the 3 major US networks created in 60 years
  • 70% of YouTube traffic comes from outside the US
  • YouTube is localized in 39 countries and across 54 languages
  • In 2011, YouTube had more than 1 trillion views
  • In 2011 there were almost 140 views for every person on Earth”

Q. Final advice for writers?

I think that the world of journalism has opened up many new categories thanks to technology and so writers should explore them in addition to pursuing what they thought they would be doing (a novel, cookbook etc.). For example, there are medical writers, technical writers, corporate writers, ghost writers, editors, proof readers and other ways that writers can expand their skill sets.
