Part 7: The new English translation of the Latin Missal

Saint Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church in Fresno implemented into their Order of the Mass all the changes of the new English translation of the Latin Missal.  The Latin hymn "Gloria" is their favorite hymn of praise.  The Latin verse "Qui tollis peccata mundi miserere nobis, qui tollis peccata mundi, suscipe deprecationem nostram, qui sedes ad dexteram Patris miserere nobis" has also been mistranslated before as "you take away the sin of the world have mercy on us, you are seated at the right hand of the Father, receive our prayer."  In the first line, the Latin word "peccata" was translated as "sin" instead of "sins."  The repeated Latin line "qui tollis peccata mundi" was omitted.  The English line "receive our prayer" was misplaced after "you are seated at the right hand of the Father," for this line is followed by "have mercy on us."  However, the new English translation of the Latin phrase "qui tollis" and the phrase "qui sedes" is incorrect.  The verbatim translation of "qui tollis" is "who take away," while the verbatim translation of "qui sedes" is "who sit."  In addition, the English verbal phrase "are seated" is in passive voice, while the Latin phrase "qui sedes" is in active voice.

The previous translation of the third part of "Gloria" has not been changed.  However, there are a few errors in the English translation of the third part.  The Latin word "solus" in the Latin text means "only," not "alone," for the English word "alone" has more than one meaning while "only" has one meaning.  The Latin word "sanctus" is an adjective describing the Lord.  It means "holy," not "Holy One."  The word "altissimus" is also an adjective which means the "highest."  The only Latin word that is a proper noun is the word "Dominus" ("the Lord").
