Performance

The Dell Venue Pro 8 operates faster than we ever thought it would. The 1.8GHz Bay Trail Atom processor really is an upgrade from the previous Atom processors of the netbook era. That's not to say you will easily be able to run processor-intensive programs such as Photoshop and Vegas Video easily. But you hopefully won't buy a tablet for this in the first place.

When surfing the Internet, the Venue Pro 8 loaded pages almost as fast as our 13-inch MacBook Pro Retina. The (included!) Microsoft Office ran zippy as well. The Venue Pro 8 will have no problem displaying your 1080p videos.

Windows 8.1

The updated Windows operating system is more tablet-friendly and good for using as a laptop as well. For one thing, the Start button is finally back. Once you press the Start button, it takes you to to all of your programs. It's an absolute must for the average consumer and Microsoft was crazy not to originally include it with Windows 8.

The SkyDrive cloud storage service is also more tightly woven into Windows 8.1. SkyDrive now doesn't just make your cloud files look and feel native inside Windows, but it will also sync all your Windows and app settings on the fly, so that you don't have to reconfigure every Windows 8.1 device you use.

Multimedia

Due to the limited screen resolution, the Venue Pro 8 makes a good, but not excellent media player. You will want to download the VLC Media Player to make sure every format plays well. You can hear your videos very well, even though the Venue Pro 8 only has one speaker -- but it is definitely a loud one.

The 1.2MP front-facing camera and the 5MP rear camera are pretty basic and perform poorly in lowly lit situations. However, let's hope you don't buy this tablet specifically for the camera capabilities.
