‘Parks and Recreation’ star Chris Pratt nabs ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ lead

Chris Pratt, best-known for the TV comedy “Parks and Recreation,” will be saving the galaxy for his next gig. According to numerous sources, including The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline Hollywood, the young actor, who is also currently on-screen in Kathryn Bigelow’s “Zero Dark Thirty,” is finalizing a deal to play Peter Quill, aka Star Lord, in “Guardians of the Galaxy,” the centerpiece of Marvel Studio’s “Phase Two” slate.

The Guardians of Galaxy have been around in various incarnations since the late sixties. The feature film version will feature Thanos, the villain teased in the end credits Easter egg in “Marvel’s The Avengers.” Peter Quill is the offspring of a human mother and extraterrestrial father, who leads a group of superhuman and extraterrestrial adventurers dedicated to safeguarding the Milky Way Galaxy.

Pratt beat out an eclectic group of actors for the role, including Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Joel Edgerton, who appears with Pratt in “Zero Dark Thirty,” Jim Sturgess (“Cloud Atlas”), Zachary Levi, Lee Pace (“Lincoln,” “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”), John Krasinski (“Promised Land”) and Michael Rosenbaum (“Smallville”).
