Park named after Canadian Olympic gold medalist

According to CBC Sports on Saturday, the city of Winnipeg has decided to rename a local park in honour of Canadian Olympic gold medalist Jill Officer. Officer was part of the Canadian Olympic women's curling team that won a gold medal at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

The park was formerly named River East Park and is in the same community in which Officer attended high school at River East Collegiate. In Saturday's ceremony, the event was attended by Winnipeg councilor Jeff Browaty, according to Glen Dawkins of the Winnipeg Sun. Browaty represents the ward of North Kildonan.

Officer teamed with skip Jennifer Jones of Winnipeg, third Kaitlyn Lawes of Winnipeg and lead Dawn Askin of Ottawa, to become only the second Canadian women's curling team ever to win an Olympic gold medal. The first Canadian Olympic women's curling team to win Olympic gold was skipped by the late Sandra Schmirler of Biggar, Saskatchewan at the 1998 Olympic Winter Games in Nagano.

The city of Winnipeg was also the location of one of Officer's most memorable curling experiences. Winnipeg was the host city of the 2013 Canadian Olympic Curling Trials. After a record of six wins and one loss in the round robin, the Jones team defeated Sherry Middaugh of Coldwater, Ontario 8-4 in the gold medal game at Winnipeg's MTS Centre, the same home of the National Hockey League's Winnipeg Jets.

The sensational women's curling team that Officer is a part of, could be considered as the greatest women's curling team in Canadian curling history. They are the only Canadian women's curling team to go through either an Olympic Winter Games or Women's World Curling Championship undefeated, an accomplishment they achieved at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. Luckily for Canadian sports fans, Officer is planning to keep curling through the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang.
