Socialite Paris Hilton was detained by South African police July 2, 2010 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium for allegedly smoking marijuana.
UPDATE: Hilton's rep released the following statement Friday after Paris was released:
Paris Hilton was questioned today by police in South Africa on allegations of smoking marijuana. However I can confirm that the incident was a complete misunderstanding and it was actually another person in the group who did it.
The case has been dropped against Paris and no charges will be made. The authorities have apologized for wrongfully accusing her since she had nothing to do with the incident.
NEWS BROKE ON TWITTER
Hilton, 29, was escorted from the stadium during the Netherlands vs. Brazil soccer match after authorities discovered her smoking pot, according to South Africa's Daily Dispatch newspaper.
[Editor's note: In a stunning development, Netherlands defeated Brazil 2-1.]
Interestingly, the news first broke on Twitter after several people tweeted that they had seen Paris being escorted from the stadium in Port Elizabeth, where the Netherlands vs. Brazil game was being held.
PARIS IS A JAIL BIRD
Hilton, who was previously arrested in 2006 and 2007 in Los Angeles for drunk-driving, was taken to the Mount Road Police Station in St Croix at around 8 p.m. local time.
Mark Magadlela, a detective in Port Elizabeth, confirmed to South African news stations that Hilton had been at the police station and was released. "There is an inquiry," he said. "I don’t want to comment further."
Paris, a great-granddaughter of Conrad Hilton (founder of the Hilton Hotel chain), was arrested in Sept. 2006 for driving while intoxicated and again in February 2007 for speeding, driving with a suspended driver's license and for not having her headlights on at night.
Hilton was then sentenced to 45 days in jail in June 2007 for parole violations, but ended up serving just 23 days in the slammer.
PARIS PURSUED CRIS
Paris, who became famous for starring in an X-rated sex tape in 2003, was previously linked to Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo, whose Portuguese squad was eliminated June 29 at the 2010 World Cup by Spain.
