Parents who sacrifice for better education should be applauded

In these days of economic hardship there are parents who still prefer to foot the bill for private education.  Although there are some who think private education is only for the very wealthy, you might be surprised to know that there are a few working class families that choose to send their children to private schools.   Even these challenging economic times doesn't seem to thwart their devotion to the ideal of education.

Why do they cling so strongly to the notion of private education even now at a time when so many are struggling financially? They are willing to sacrifice and forestall vacations, fancy cars and other conveniences in order to fulfill their ideal of education as the single most effective way of overcoming classism, racism and ignorance.

These parents are not only the ones that will send their children to designated private schools, but it includes those parents that are willing to pay high property taxes to live in high cost city neighborhoods and suburban towns that have public schools with strong educational credentials.  In Westchester County examples of these types of public schools are in Bronxville and Scarsdale.

That dream of a better life for their children is really not so difficult to understand. These parents know that if their children can be exposed to smaller classroom instruction, greater attention by teachers unburdened by bureaucracy, and an experiential learning environment, their children have a better chance of entering highly coveted placements in some of the top private colleges in the country.

Additionally, many parents realize their children are an important part of building a strong future for the country.  Isn’t this just as patriotic as sending young people to war?  The tuition costs these parents are facing are upwards of $35,000 to $40,000 starting at kindergarten.  They should be applauded and supported as much as we can because their success is success for our community and for the future of all.
