A father from Steubenville, Ohio, James A. Taylor, 30, was sentenced on Feb. 21 to six months in prison after admitting in court that he punished his three young children, ages 5, 6 and 8, by placing the kids inside plastic storage containers that were duct-taped shut with a hole cut in the top for air, according to The Herald Star.
At some point, water was poured on the children inside the containers, police reported.
At some point, the holes were covered with a T-shirt, police reported.
After the kids were placed in the containers, the Taylors left to go to the grocery store.
The bad dad will be spending the next six months at the Eastern Ohio Correction Center after pleading guilty to:
- one misdemeanor count of endangering children,
- one felony count of child endangering, and
- one misdemeanor charge of unlawful restraint.
Taylor’s wife, Samantha M. Taylor, 26, the children’s step-mother, pleaded guilty to the exact same charges. Her sentencing is still pending.
Additionally, two other adults, Glenn A. Adams, 28, and Daniel A. McKenney, 22, who were present at the scene when the kids were placed into those plastics containers, also pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor charge each of unlawful restraint and were placed on probation for one year.
The father told police that:
Adams and McKenney, an uncle of the children, were supposed to let the kids out of the containers.
A woman came to the home in the meantime and let the kids out of the containers.
The three children were placed into the care of the county’s children services temporarily but are now living with their grandfather.
The father said he put his kids into the boxes as punishment for playing in the basement where they knocked the plastic containers over and broke some other items.
