Marion County, Oregon. The child abuse trial of Oleksandr and Lyudmila Kozlov was in it's fourth day Thursday, when the testimony of six of their seven children had finally finished. The Kozlovs, who immigrated to the US from the Ukraine in 2003, were acting as their own attorneys and had been questioning the children.
They asked each child if they understood they were being disciplined according to Scripture.
"It doesn't say that you have to leave marks on us," their 9-year-old daughter said.

The Kozlovs, who claim they were only punishing the children according to God's Law, not only didn't "spare the rod" but, as their children testified, beat them with a wire, belts, a leather leash, a radio cord, an iron cord, sticks and hands. The injuries were noticed by at least one of the childrens' schoolteachers but the alleged abuse went unreported until three of the children, ages 13, 14 and 15, called 911 from a payphone and reported it themselves.
Supporters from the parents' First Slavic Baptist Church as well as four other Russian churches and the Kozlov's former church, the Evangelical Baptist Church of Salem in Dallas, have publicly protested the arrests and trial. Such protests have taken on several occasions since the Kozlov's arrest in July.

Will this judge tell them they are good people like the Neumann judge did?
What, or who is this "Neumann" judge? I'm not familiar with it, but it sounds like the "Newsom" judge who definitely didn't do that (although I'm sure that's because it's a different person! lol).

It is a mis use of scripture to say they were only doing what scripture teaches...as well as some of the quotations here on this site...The Bible teaches correction...even with the rod....but that is no different than a spanking paddle in the old days...never to break the skin, or leave bruises etc.....that is ridiculous and an excuse for stepping over the line...and an embarrassment to all of us who follow the Bible when they stood up and tried to use the bible as justification for their actions. I totally agree with you and join with you in saying ...My goodness folks..the kids are the ones who finally called 911...even the 9 year old girl said in court to her parents that the Bible doesn't say to leave marks on them!!! To my Bible friends I say....wake up and let's have some common sense here and correctly understand the Bible as well!!!
"provoke your children not to wrath" - these people certainly provoked their children. There is a difference between discipline (which is any sort of moral guidance, correction or punishment such as time out) and abuse, and these parents went way over the line and are not worthy of their children's respect.
Discipline is self-control. I'd like to 'discipline' whomever made people think the word means punishment.
It amazes me how people twist scripture to justify their actions....I can't say they aren't Christians...however...they crossed the line....just like the little girl said...the bible doesn't say to leave marks on them!!!! Shame on church leadership for not standing on the side of truth on this. Spanking is taught in scripture...but not leaving marks and bruises on your children...and where is the teaching on how to communicate with your children aside from spanking? Something is clearly missing in this situation whether in the church or their friends and church family I don't know but it needs to be addressed in this family by church leadership...this should have never gotten to a court of law....but obviously nothing was done so it had to be! Such a shame! Even the deacon admitted he would not have reported it! Wow...obviously there is something missing in his understanding of scripture, church responsibility and authority and civil authority!!!
