Parents in Missouri may have to report gun ownership to schools

The Missouri Senate is once again considering a bill that would require parents of any student in a public, private, or charter school to notify the governing body of the school if they own a firearm. The Indiana New Center reported on Jan. 10, 2014, that failure to report a firearm in the home would result in a $100 fine. This proposed law would include firearms that are not required to be registered, including shotguns and rifles.

Last year, a similar bill was put before the senate and it never got out of committee. The purpose of SB 549 is to prevent children from accessing improperly stored firearms. However, the bill goes far past that. Requiring parents to register their firearms with the school district will not prevent irresponsible people from storing firearms within reach of children. The only people that would be exempt from this proposed gun registration law are homeschoolers and households without school aged children.

The proposed bill will require custodial and non-custodial parents to notify the schools, even if the parent who enrolls the child in school does not own a firearm. SB 549 is nothing more than a power grab by the school districts. It is driven by fear. The paperwork generated will add costs to schools and place additional burdens on school office staff. It opens the door for families who own firearms to be singled out and treated unfairly by school employees and teachers who are against gun ownership.

Lynda Altman is very concerned about the state of the public schools in the United States. She is an advocate of the right to own guns under the Second Amendment, but does not believe in arming teachers. Lynda writes a blog called Homeschooling When Mom has Cancer.
