Children demand and need so much attention and for first time parents a new baby can be an overwhelming challenge. Who could imagine that such a tiny being could demand so much time and attention?
It is very important to have a support system as a new parent. Support from your own parents, friends, your significant other, family members, even neighbors is very helpful. Also having someone you trust to watch your baby so you can get a little break is important, too.
Taking care of yourself is essential. Practicing healthful habits is a great way to start that pursuit. Try to have healthy snacks on hand; cut up veggies, low fat yogurt, whole wheat crackers, "good for you" snacks that you can grab and go. Try to make a bit of time to exercise each day, even if it is only ten minutes of yoga or walking in place.
Once your baby is sleeping through the night, try to get seven or eight hours of sleep. Nap when the baby naps. Being rested certainly helps keep you focused and less stressed. And being a less stressed parent will allow you to enjoy your baby even more.
Do not isolate yourself from others. Get together with other parents. Forming playgroups is a good social activity for you and your child.
Parenting is on the job training. And there are resources available to help you do your job better. As your baby grows, you will feel more confident in your abilities. And the rewards of being more self-assured as a parent will help you do a better job.
