Paranormal tourist: Ghost hunting at Battle Alley Antiques

Are spirits still attached to their antiques in this shop?

If you’re looking to capture paranormal images on your camera or ghostly voices on your audio recorder, then Battle Alley Antiques in Holly, Michigan is a great place to start. The antique store, which is a mini-mall of many small rooms rented out by antique dealers, used to be a brothel that was accessed via an underground tunnel. Patrons of the Holly Hotel, which is next door, used the tunnel to enter the brothel unnoticed back in the 1880s.

Business hours are Monday - Saturday 10:30 am to 5:30 pm and Sunday 12 to 5 pm.

Holly, Michigan, is famous for the attention given to it by “Carry Nation” who was the famous “saloon smasher” who tried to rid towns of alcohol during prohibition. The street that the hotel and antique store reside on is called “Battle Alley” due to the many local ruffians who fought each other during drunken brawls and heated arguments in the late 19th century.

There are plentiful accounts of paranormal activity occurring in broad daylight. Full body apparitions in period clothing have been seen in the store and phantom voices have been heard. There is also a ghost cat that is said to prowl the main floor. But most of the activity has occurred on the second floor, accessed by a stairway next to the store entrance.

Up there, a customer had his hat knocked off and ghost hunting groups have captured EVPs (electronic voice phenomenon) on audio recorders. People have reported cold spots and shadows that move across the rooms for no natural reason.

Pat Kenny, who owns Battle Alley Antiques and her brother John who assists her, are both very willing to talk about their ghosts and the many stories that their customers have shared. And the resident spirits seem friendly and playful, pulling pranks like shutting off lights and making objects appear where they don’t belong. At least, they’re friendly until Carry Nation is mentioned!
