At 6 p.m. on Friday, February 8 Bert’s Pine Bay Gallery in picturesque Matlacha will be the site of the Parade of Mermaids, an exciting prelude to Island Pirate Fest 2013.
Bert’s Pine Bay Gallery invites mermaids and art lovers to enjoy a glass of juice or wine, and a few snacks, compliments of Bert’s Bar, as they register for the Parade of Mermaids. Each “Daughter of the Sea” will be asked to donate anywhere from $5 to $20 of human currency in exchange for the currency of the sea: a Mermaid Sand Dollar. Mermaids will also receive instructions for an authentic “Mermaid Spell”, and a sprig of rosemary.
The parade will depart at 7:00 p.m. to the top of the Matlacha Bridge, where respects will be paid and offerings made of “land-loving-memory-inducing rosemary” to the mermaids of the deep. At Bert’s Bar on the deck, two winners will be announced and crowned with glittering tiaras. Mermaids will compete in two groups: adult mermaid (over 18), and child mermaid (under 18).
The Parade of Mermaids is part of Island Pirate Fest Weekend, a breast cancer fundraiser on Matalcha. Organizer From Our Hearts has raised to date more than $500,000.00 to provide much needed help to community members with nowhere else to turn. The event runs from February 8-10 and includes the 3rd Annual Pirate's Ball on Saturday, February 9, and live auction at Bert's Bar & Grill on Sunday, February 10. Sponsors include Sandbar Productions, Falling Tide Charters, Charlotte Maugans - Coldwell Banker, Hollywood Bicycle Center Inc, Bubba's Roadhouse & Saloon, Berts Bar, and Lee Memorial Health System Foundation.
