Parable of Weeds
“24 Jesus told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. 25 But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. 26 When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.” (Matthew 13:24-26)
“37 He answered, “The one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man. 38 The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the people of the kingdom. The weeds are the people of the evil one,” (Matthew 13:37-38)
Jesus taught another short story. He used weeds being sown along with the good wheat seed. Most gardeners and farmers know that weeds are not good for the harvest. The normal response is to get rid of weeds as soon as possible. Weed killer is purchased or they are pulled up. The idea is to get rid of them quickly. The goal is a prosperous crop at harvest time.
The story indicates that an enemy did this evil deed of sowing weeds. It was during the resting time when sleep was occurring. It was only during the harvest that both wheat and weed came up together. The Scripture indicates that God’s people are the good seed. Jesus plants the good seed. The weeds are evil people and are sown by the devil.
