“7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants.” (Matthew 13:7)
“22 The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful.” (Matthew 13:22)
The parable continues and teaches about another type of seed receiver. The seed began to grow, but thorns were its neighbor. Thorns have a sharp point and are not very nice to touch. The results from these thorns are choked plants. The plants do not grow properly and do not yield an abundance of fruit.
Jesus is speaking about a person that has received the Gospel message. He or she becomes preoccupied with wealth and other life worries. The Scripture calls wealth pursuits deceitful. The accumulation of wealth and material possessions does not yield the abundant life in Christ Jesus. The Bible states that those seeking to get rich “pierce themselves with many sorrows.”(1 Tim. 6:10) It is true, “One cannot serve both God and money.”(Matthew 6:24) The ability to produce the righteous fruit of the Holy Spirit will be lacking.
