Studio XXI (59 W. 21st St.) was at capacity at rap artist Papoose’s birthday celebration and video release party Tuesday night. Papoose, who turned 36 years old the following night, was joined by ThisIs50’s Young Jack Thriller, Ice-T and Coco, Jadakiss, and others to watch the music video for the hard-hitting track “6 a.m.” Ice-T reprises his gangster rap classic “6 In the Mornin’” for the hook of Papoose’s single, and rappers Jim Jones and Jadakiss each have verses on the song. Party guests watched the gritty music video, and enjoyed music by Hot 97’s DJ Magic and Shade 45’s DJ Fugi Slim. On “6 a.m.” Papoose does what he does best: “Pure hip-hop... official hip-hop,” Papoose says. “No gimmicks. Shout out to Jadakiss, Ice-T, Jim Jones.”
Ice-T talked to Examiner.com about how he became a part of the project: “Papoose decided to sample ‘6 In The Mornin’ which is a very West Coast classic. And since we’re friends through Smoothe Da Hustler, he’s SMG, we all part of the same clique... he said ‘Yo, get Ice to come in and actually do the hook versus just as a sample.’ So I’m supporting Papoose... I’ve been knowing Papoose about 20 years. He’s always been a prodigy; he’s an incredible rapper.”
Papoose’s mixtape “Cigar Society” was released on March 5th, and is already receiving great reviews. The mixtape has “meaningful features,” says Papoose. “Prodigy from Mobb Deep, Raekwon, Loaded Lux... the list goes on. My Thug-A-Cation crew... It’s just all meaningful features.”
Papoose married rapper Remy Ma in May 2008, and recently got a tattoo on his arm of his wife inside a bottle of Rémy Martin. Remy Ma, incarcerated since 2008, is scheduled to be released in July 2014. When asked how it feels to celebrate his birthday, upcoming album, and other events without his wife, Papoose stated “I’m focused. She’ll be home real soon. I’m focused—that’s what it’s all about. Free Remy.”
