On Wednesday, NASCAR handed down penalties to the No. 6 Sharp-Gallaher Racing team in the Camping World Truck Series for the now-infamous slap Kelly Heaphy, girlfriend of driver Mike Skeen, laid on Max Papis after the Sept. 1 race at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada.
Heaphy has been indefinitely banned from all NASCAR events. In addition, crew chief Bryan Berr was fined $2,500 for violating sections 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing) and 9-4A (crew chief assumes responsibility for the actions of his team members).
The race was Skeen's Truck Series debut. He and Papis were racing for third position on the final lap when they made contact. As a result, Skeen wound up dropping back to 13th and Papis finished sixth.
Heaphy slapped Papis right after Papis completed an interview with FOX Sports 1, the television network that provided live coverage of the race. FOX Sports 1 cameras caught the slap and it became a part of the broadcast. According to Papis, the slap dislocated his jaw. SEE VIDEO OF THE SLAP ON UPPER-LEFT.
