Paperweights: Why Affleck's Oscar snub (or anything else) doesn't matter

The 85th Academy Awards will be held this coming weekend, for which all the buzz is around the movie Argo.

This is largely due to the fact that director Ben Affleck was not nominated for Best Director, a category in which he has otherwise been cleaning house. It will certainly be the elephant in the room when the category is awarded; an embarrassment to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences that will not be easily forgotten.

Not that the Academy Awards were without their blemishes before then.

Whether through incompetence, neglect or even desperation, pretty much every major award show has suffered an obvious lapse in judgment that wound up playing into the hands of its critics and diminishing the value of all other awards, past and future alike.

So before Mr. Affleck lets anyone work him up into a frenzy over the fact that he wasn't nominated for Best Director, he should instead be reminded that the Oscars aren't worth all that much anyway.

Nor, for that matter, is the collection of paperweights he has already accumulated.
