An East Village sewing store is great for last minute supplies, said the lead singer of Paperdoll Band on Tuesday.
Teresa Lee went to Gizmo, looking for straps to sew onto a yellow jumper. She plans on wearing the outfit for her upcoming perfomance at Central Park’s New York Pride gay rally this Saturday.
“I wore this last Saturday for a video shoot thinking it is going to be great, and then the whole time I was putting on double-sided tape…” she said. “The last thing you want to be is uncomfortable on stage.”
Gizmo, located on 1st Avenue between 9th and 10th Street, has been selling fabrics, buttons, zippers and other sewing supplies in addition to sewing machine repairs for 21 years.
Gizmo owner, Hossein Amid, said, “I have all kinds of stuff. A spool of thread is $2.50. I have buttons from 20 cents to a dollar, a $1.50. Trimming, it depends. Fabric, it depends. Three dollars and up.”
Amid also gets broken sewing machines for repair every day, which all take about one week to fix, he said.
His office is lined with machines in need of restoration, but Amid somehow finds time to do both his mechanical work and run his own business, assisting customers like Lee.
“Everyone is always in such a rush and I’ve come here before for a last minute thing. [Amid] is always really nice,” Lee said.
Paperdoll’s music is heard in NIKE, Dayquil, Good Day New York, The Today Show, MTV, Blender, Maxim, Gotham and more.
After touring China, the band has returned to New York City and is starting right in the Lower East Side, bringing business to stores like Gizmo.
