Paper Mill Playhouse presents 'Grease' as 75th Anniversary Season finale

The final show of the Paper Mill Playhouse’s 75th Anniversary Season is the much loved musical “Grease.” The show began previews on May 28. It will formally open on June 1 and then run through June 29, 2014.

“Grease” has a book, music and lyrics by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey. The show will be directed by Daniel Goldstein with original choreography by JoAnn M. Hunter. Additional songs are by John Farrar, Barry Gibb, Scott Simon and Louis St. Louis. The Paper Mill’s production of “Grease” is an all new production which will feature iconic songs from the movie and the stage version.

The musical gained fame on Broadway where it won seven Tony Awards, a Drama Desk Award, and a Theatre World Award. It tells the story of growing up and falling in love during the fabulous 1950’s. “Grease” got a new life when John Travolta and Oliva Newton-John starred in the movie version. It later was the subject of a television show where the leads for the new cast were chosen by the public and later appeared in a Broadway revival of the show.

The cast includes Taylor Louderman (Sandy Dumbrowski), Bobby Conte Thornton (Danny Zuko), Robin De Jesus (Doody), Telly Leung (Teen Angel), Morgan Weed (Rizzo), Shane Donovan (Kenickie), Dana Steingold (Frenchy), and Tommy Bracco (Sonny). Also cast are Joey Sorge (Vince Fontaine), Donna English (Miss Lynch) Tess Soltau (Marty), Matt Wood (Roger), Leela Rothenberg (Jan), Eloise Kropp (Patty Simcox), Tyler Jones (Eugene), and Kat Nejat (Cha-Cha). Rounding out the cast are Ensemble members Kevin Santos, Gillian Munsavac, and Swings Mike Longo, and Kate Bailey.

Casting for this show has a special significance for the Paper Mill Playhouse. According to Artistic Director Mark S. Hoebee, “What excites us most about “Grease” is fulfilling Paper Mill’s mission of nurturing young talent. Five members of the “Grease” company will receive their Actors’ Equity card during the run.”

“Grease” will be performed at Paper Mill Playhouse eight times a week, Wednesday through Sunday. The performance schedule is Wednesday at 7:00pm, Thursday at 1:30pm and 7:00pm, Friday at 7:00pm, Saturday at 1:30pm and 7:00pm and Sunday at 1:30pm and 7:00pm. In addition to the regular performances, the Paper Mill will offer the following:

Audio-described performances for Grease will be on Saturday, June 21, and Sunday, June 22, at 1:30 pm. Prior to these performances, the theater will offer free sensory seminars. Sensory seminars offer an opportunity for patrons with vision loss to hear a live, in-depth description of the production elements of the show and hands-on interaction with key sets, props, and costumes.

There will be a sign-interpreted and open-captioned performance on Sunday, June 22, at 7:00 pm.

The Sunday evening performances of “Grease” will be “1950’s dress up nights.” Show up in your best 1950’s outfit and receive a 20% discount at the Paper Mill Playhouse Gift Shop.

The Paper Mill Playhouse will offer the following free events during the show’s run for those attending the corresponding to the day/time of the event:

Thurs. May 29, June 5, June 12 - 6:00pm in the Mezzanine - The Conversation Club meets to help audiences learn more about the show you are about to see. The discussions are led by members of the Paper Mill’s Artistic and Education Departments.

Sat. June 21 Following the Matinee in the Orchestra section of seating, there will be a Q&A with the Cast. This event allows you to meet the cast and ask actors questions about the show or the role they are portraying.
