With the signing of K Olindo Mare, K John Kasay became expendable.
Kasay, 41, has been with the Panthers since the team's inception.
"If I know John, he's an extremely competitive individual and will want to continue kicking in this league," Panthers GM Marty Hurney said of Kasay's release.
Last year, Carolina cut it's Quarterback Jake Delhomme. Cutting Kasay is something that many Panther fans never thought would happen. Most thought that Kasay would retire on his own terms, however, that appears to not be the case.
Kasay is by far the leading scorer in Panthers team history with 1,482 points. The next closest Panther is Steve Smith with 362.
Kasay will be replaced by Olindo Mare, signed today to a 4-year, $12 million deal. Mare, unlike Kasay, can still both kick field goals and kickoff -- something Kasay hasn't done in several years.
