Panthers keep RB Williams in Carolina

The Carolina Panthers made a bold step in fortifying their offense on Wednesday, signing running back DeAngelo Williams to a 5-year, $43 million deal which includes $21 million in guaranteed money.

Williams, who was the Panthers' first round pick in 2006, only played in 6 games last season before being placed on injured reserve with a broken foot. He also received considerable interest from the New York Giants and Denver Broncos before deciding to return to the Panthers.

Williams, 28, is the Panthers' all-time leading rusher, with 4,211 yards amassed on the ground. He has also scored 31 rushing touchdowns in his 5-year career.

"I honestly and truly want to stay a Carolina Panther and they're doing their part to keep me a Carolina Panther," Williams said via a live-streamed video chat on Monday. "If everything looks great, then why entertain other offers?"

Williams will continue to work in tandem with RB Jonathan Stewart to form one of the more formidable backfields in the NFL. Both Williams and Stewart eclipsed 1,000 yards rushing in 2009.
