Panthers keep low-key profile in free agency

Despite a flurry of addition by subtraction, the Carolina Panthers have been very quiet during the early days of the 2010 free agency period.

Defensive Tackle Ed Johnson, formerly of the Colts, was signed before the free agency period began.

The Panthers have signed WR Wallace Wright and S Marcus Hudson to 1-year deals, but neither player figures to be more than special teams players at best.

Quarterback Matt Moore signed his restricted free agent tender, guaranteeing that the Panthers will have at least one signal caller that was on the roster last season. Moore's agent stated that they signed the tender quickly because it was apparent that the team wasn't interested in discussing a long-term deal until the league and players association work out a new collective bargaining agreement.

"The more you talked about it, I think it was clear that Matt was going to go in as the guy and take the reps and try to develop him," Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said.

Offensive Tackle Rob Pettiti is back for another shot at making the roster. Pettiti's agent, Ralph Cindrich, calls him the best offensive lineman in the UFL. Perhaps he'll have another chance to prove his agent right this coming season.

Defensive end Tyler Brayton signed a three-year deal on Wednesday, which brings more stability and experience to a defensive line that seemed very thin on paper. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The Panthers have stated publicly that the team intends on building through the draft. That is consistent with their lack of signing any big name free agents to date.
