While the Supreme Court ponders Proposition 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act, Pandora Productions will present a timely staged reading of 8 this week.
The issue of gay marriage has been a major one in the United States throughout the last decade. Protests for and against the issue have sprung up all over the country. Many states have decided to either support or reject gay marriage as legal.
No state has come under as much scrutiny on the issue than California, which passed Proposition 8, a state constitution amendment defining marriage as between a man and a woman, in 2008 by popular vote.
Since Proposition 8's passing, various courts have either upheld or rejected Proposition 8, including the rejection from the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals last February. The issue and accompanying case is now in the hands of the US Supreme Court.
Dustin Lance Black created the production 8, which is based on the transcripts from the Federal District Court hearings. Language used in the staged reading are actual words from those transcripts. Staged readings of 8 will take place on Jan. 3, 4, and 5 at 7:30 p.m. each night. All performances are to happen at The Henry Clay Theatre, located on the third floor of the Henry Clay Building in Old Louisville at 604 South Third Street.
