Thursday, Pandora released some numbers in a press release that has the rest of the music industry up in arms; many radio executives said the numbers released are simply not true. Pandora said that they now have 8.44% of total radio listeners and this number is up .44% in just the last month, according to Radio Ink. The news has created a buzz Friday morning.
Pandora is using their own numbers to estimate the calculations and not an outside company, and radio industry executives around the country said Thursday that the numbers aren’t real and people should not listen to them.
Pandora said that they had 1.49 billion hours of listening in November and 72.4 million active listeners. Pandora claimed that they were the number one radio station in a few major markets around the country.
Thursday, radio industry executives around the country openly attacked Pandora for the claims and said they simply were not true. Concerns were raised that advertisers may actually believe the numbers and flock to Pandora now because of this considerable growth.
