According to a Feb. 28 report in “Bloomberg”, “Pandora” has just announced that starting in March, it will limit how much music a listener can get for free. This news is huge because this free Internet radio service is so popular, with more than 65 million listeners.
Free listening on your smartphone or tablet will now be capped at 40 hours a month, starting March 1. If you want to listen more than 40 hours a month on your mobile devices, you must pay 99 cents. Your other option is to subscribe for $4 a month and get both unlimited mobile listening and no commercials.
"Pandora" is doing this because the royalty costs that it must pay the music companies are rising much faster than advertising sales and subscriber fees. Pandora must pay a royalty on each song streamed.
This limit is only for listening on mobile devices. Listening to "Pandora" through your computer is still completely free.
